Service Description/Overview
Breast Screen is a free service for the early detection of Breast Cancer for women over 50 years of age. Breast xrays offer the best option for early discovery of breast cancer, and a greater chance of successful treatment and recovery. Mammography is a low dose xray during which each breast is compressed firmly for a few seconds. Once the xray is taken it is read by two doctors trained and experienced in the detection and assessment of early breast cancer. Results are forwarded to you by letter, and if nominated, to your GP within two weeks. If any changes are detected on xray, Breast Screen offers a free high quality assessment at St John of God Hospital in Ballarat. This includes counselling, clinical assessment plus possible further xrays and biopsy. If cancer is detected, you are referred back to your own doctor for treatment. The service also offers an information and education service to the region.
